Pastor Phillip Powell
Pastor Corbett Phillip Powell is a native of San Francisco, CA. Sr. Pastor Powell has served the city of San Francisco in many capacities, including serving on Mayoral Advisory Committees, nonprofit Boards of Directors, as a Commissioner, and as an Arbitrator. In recognition of his years of service and dedication to the city of San Francisco and Bay Area, he has received several honors and awards by organizations, including the San Francisco Board of Supervisors, former Mayor Willie Brown, Senator Nancy Skinner, and Congresswoman Barbara Lee.

He is a magna cum laude honors graduate of Fisk University located in Nashville, TN where he received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology, Religion, and Philosophy. Rev. Powell also furthered his studies at the University of Memphis in Tennessee – Cecil Humphrey Law School Pre-Law Program, and abroad at Estudio Sampere in Salamanca Spain. He also holds a Master’s degree in Public Administration from the University of San Francisco with magna cum laude honors.

Pastor Powell has been a member of True Hope Church of God in Christ in San Francisco for over two decades.  Sr. Pastor Powell currently serves as the Chief Financial Officer of the church for the last four years, and is a member of the Board of Trustees for True Hope Church, and was elected as Treasurer on the Board of Trustees.  

Dr. Arelious Walker, Founder of True Hope Church, is a longtime renowned Pastor Emeritus,
advocate and activist in the Bayview Hunters Point community.  He has founded and
instituted several programs to benefit the community:

  • The Caring & Restoration Homes, Inc.
  • The Rehabilitation Homes
  • Bayiew Hope Trucking Academy
  • Computer Learning Center
  • FranDelJa Enrichment Center and Head Start Program
  • Bayview Hope Housing
  • The Bayview Hunters Point Multi-Purpose Senior Services

Dr. Walker's passion is working to bring equity, jobs, housing, and needed services to the southeast sector of San Francisco.  He was elected to serve as Chair of the Board of Directors for the Bayview Hunters Point BMPMS.  He is also a representative of the Tabernacle Community Development Corporation, which includes plans to get the Hunters Point Shipyard and Candlestick ideas to improve Bayview Hunters Point.

Elder Harold Bates
Elder Harold Douglas Bates Sr. was born in Mobile Alabama,  He attended elementary and High school in Mobile Alabama, But in 1969 after graduating from High School, And leaving two scholarship offers,(football,& Track)He with the help of his Uncle and Aunt ( Elder & Sister Huffman) moved to San Francisco Ca. Where he continued his education, attending City College Of San Francisco for a year and a half, majoring in Sociology.

In 1975, Elder Bates was appointed as a Jr. Deacon, Ordained as a Sr. Deacon in 1977,worked with the witnessing committee, Assistant Sunday School Superintendent, Sunday School teacher for youth and young adults,(yet actively teaching) sang in the state choir, also sang with a formed group called the Holy Directions, served on the local Trustee Board, worked on the Pastor’s Aid committee, Called to the Ministry in 1982,received Minister’s license in 1983,Ordained as an Elder in1988 by Bishop W.W. Hamilton, Appointed youth Pastor in 1985,served as president over Youth Executive Board, Appointed 2nd Administrative Pastor in 1989 by Dr.Walker, Currently serves as the Assistant Pastor of True Hope C.O.G.I.C. Also an update to my employment, I retired in the month of December 2016 after being employed at Flying Tigers and FEDEX after over 46 yrs

Elder Bates is a man who loves God with all of his heart, He is not concerned about positions in the church, he just desires to be a servant to God’s people, And to do the will of almighty God, He recognizes that positions alone will not qualify you to get into heaven, He is saying yes to the will of the Lord, Anyway you use me Lord I’ll be satisfied, NOT MY WILL LORD,BUT LET YOUR DIVINE WILL BE DONE IN MY LIFE. He is currently also the president of the Elders Council and church counselor.
Sister Darlene Bates

Sister Darlene Bates was born in San Francisco, California on September 5, 1950.  She attended school in San Francisco.  In 1968 after graduating from Polytechnic High School, Sister Bates went on to Designing School as she had a love for fashion.  Once she completed Designing School she worked in that field for a short time sewing clothes for family and friends.  In 1969 she obtained a job at the Post Office where she held several positions i.e., Distribution & Window Clerk and Training Instructor.  Sister Bates has received many Special Achievement Awards in recognition of her performance.  She worked at the San Francisco Post Office for 37 years until she retired. 

Sister Bates has been saved since she was 21 years old. She received the Baptism of the Holy Ghost and loves the Lord. Sister Bates is the wife of Elder Harold Bates. They have been married for 45 wonderful years and have three children, two beautiful Daughters in Love’s and a Son in Love six grandchildren.  Sister Bates has been working in the True Hope ministry for 46 years. She has been the Youth Church Mother, Supervisor of the Youth Usher Board, Women’s Day and Night Supervisor, Sunday School Teacher, Hospitality, and Communion Hostess, along with working with the Jail Ministry.  In 2017 she begin Working with the Soup Kitchen at Ennis Chapel COGIC. in Richmond Ca.  Sister Bates loves Sunday School and on any given Sunday you can find her teaching.  She currently serves on the Mother’s Board as Assistant Church Mother and does whatever her hands find to do. 

One of her favorite scriptures is Psalms 116:12

"What shall I render unto the Lord for all his benefits toward me?"
